Sap

Last weekend we tapped our own maple tree in our front yard.  That will make sap.  And after the sap comes running out we can make maple syrup to go on our pancakes.

I'm going to tell you how to do it.  This will work on any kind of maple tree, but the best is a sugar maple tree.

1. Measure - Measure the height of the hole so you know where to put the hole.  In between 2 and 4 feet high.
2.  Drill hole - Drill the hole in about 3 feet from the ground.  It needs to be drilled up so the hole goes down so the sap can come out.
3.  Pound in the spile - The spile will help the sap so it doesn't just run down the tree when in comes out.  This way the sap can go out right into a bag or a bucket.  (The water in the picture isn't water.  It was alcohol to clean the drill and the spile so the tree stays healthy.)
4.  Put on a bag - It can be a bucket or a bag.  This is just what will collect the sap so it doesn't just go flying right into the snow or ground.
5.  Wait - Wait for a cold night followed by a warm day.  That's when the sap will come out.  We have been waiting for a week!!

6.  Boil the sap - If you boil it by warm, the sap will turn into maple syrup.  You need 40 gallons of sap to make a whole bucket of maple syrup.
And that's how you do it!
